What to Wear

At an interview, one of the key things is that you look smart and professional. So shorts, football jerseys, ripped jeans, trainers, mini-skirts and hot pants are a definite NO, NO!! If in doubt, boys should wear a suit, shirt and tie. If you don’t have a suit - smart pants, shirt and a tie are sufficient. For girls tailored jacket, blouse and skirt or trousers will give you the desired look. If you are still unsure about what to wear, email the employer and ask. They will be happy to provide you with some guidance.

Arrive on time

You’ve got an interview your dream apprentice scheme in Stockport, but there is nothing that says ‘I don’t care’ more than arriving late for an interview. It sends out a negative message. Being punctual could be the difference between getting the job or not. Plan your journey the night before so you know exactly how you are getting there. If you are using public transport, we would advise that you leave an hour before your interview, just in case of traffic or any other unforeseen circumstances on your route.

Research the company

If you really want to impress your potential employer, then demonstrating that you have researched their company is certainly the way to do so. Employers want to see that not only are you interested in their apprenticeships in Bury, but that you are also interested in doing it with their company. Spend some time on their website to find out a bit about their history and things they have achieved. Google them to find out if they have been in the local or national news for anything. Look at their social media platforms – they are always a useful source of information. Find out three facts about the company that you can say during the interview – it will let the employer know that you have done your homework.

 Speak clearly

This might sound like a simple thing but having the ability to communicate clearly in the workplace is vital. The pressure from an interview might cause you to stumble over words or rush what you want to say. Just stay calm, relax and pronounce your words properly. Don’t use slang during your interview. It’s a sure fire way to turn the employer off you.

Have some questions ready

Don’t forget that an interview is not only an opportunity for the employer to interview you, but also for you to interview the employer. Make sure that you have some of your own questions ready for them. Think of things that are important to you in the role and ask questions around that. Examples of questions you could ask are: ‘how many of your apprentices have gained full-time roles with the company after completing their apprenticeships?’ or ‘as the apprentice wage is relatively low will you be covering the cost of my lunch or travel?’. Employers can be flexible and will put together packages and incentives if they want to get you on board. Don’t be afraid to ask!
